Hi! I’m Rebecca, lover of Jesus, my hubby, good hot tea and great conversations! I claim a little town in western North Carolina as my home, but Texas has stolen my country-girl heart.

Favorite Things - June 2016

Between blogs, podcasts, tv shows, conversations, and books, I take in lots of information every day. As I take it in and process through it, I am almost always contemplating what I want to share with you! Here are a few of the things I'm loving right now... and a few thoughts as well!

Texas Sunsets...

The sunsets are beyond gorgeous this summer. I took this picture a few weeks ago. Last night's sunset had the most bold colors of orange and pink and purple I've seen in a long time. Sadly I wasn't in a good location to snap a photo.

In my Kitchen...

I've been on a cookie baking kick lately... these shortbread pecan cookies were amazing and I think I am going to test run these peanut butter cookies tonight!

Blogs...

Penelope Loves Lists - This post on Mind Mapping was intriguing. I've always done something similar on my own, but am looking forward to incorporating some of the more detailed aspects of this concept moving forward.

The Gospel Coalition - This interview with Karen Swallow Prior added a book or two to my TBR list. She is the author of the biography on Hannah More that I read in March.

Kitchn - An unusual perspective on picnics, this post offers lessons from literature. Read it for laughs the next time you break out your picnic basket.

Family Photos...

I've been on the hunt for the perfect Instagram pictures to post in honor of my little sister's sweet 16. It's been really fun to pause and look at pictures instead of speedily scrolling through looking for a specific shot! I've found some great gems like this one! Also.. Happy Birthday to my Favorite Sis!

On My Phone...

VSCO - I am new to the VSCO app and am learning so much about editing pictures beyond the world of Instagram and Apple Photos. It's dangerously fun to play with the exposure, saturation, and contrast of photos!

May Designs Backgrounds - May Designs is an Austin based notebook and stationary company. Every month they put out free backgrounds for phones and computers on their blog. My month cannot officially start until I have updated the calendar background on my phone! It saves me so much time with scheduling and planning and sometimes, I hate to admit, remembering what day it is! July's are already available! Download them here.

Here is a screenshot of my phone's lock screen with May Designs' June background!

Podcasts...

The Briefing - Al Mohler, President of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, produces a daily podcast in which he discusses current events as they relate to evangelicals. This podcast is usually less than 25 minutes and is providing that extra bit of information on current events to help take my conversations with people and my personal thoughts to the next level. When I listen to this episode on time and a half, I can finish a whole episode on the way to the grocery store and back, on the way to a friend's house, or while unloading the dishwasher.

The Simple Show - Tsh Oxenreider from the blog, The Art of Simple, hosts this podcast. Tsh and her guests talk about reading, parenting, simple living, and so much more. I pick and choose which episodes to listen to based on her guests and topic.

In My Free Time...

Magazines. Specifically reading a whole magazine in one sitting. It's wonderful. Have you ever tried this before? If not, I dare you to do so! Pick up a magazine - my favorites are Real Simple, Martha Stewart Living, and People Style Watch - and try it!

On Netflix...

Hart of Dixie - I didn't know that I was watching the last episode when I watched the last episode...until the last three minutes of the show. I was sitting in my chair thinking "wait, wait, no. no. It's not over, is it?!" I stared at the TV and realized I now had to choose something new! I've been easing my way through the three seasons of this show - I've probably been watching it for the last three months or so. It was a great way to waste time!

Grey's Anatomy - I began watching Grey's a few years ago and have now seen every episode through the last season that aired. After reading Shonda Rhimes' book, The Year of Yes, I was curious to watch the show again after knowing a little more about the writer. I am halfway through the first season and am currently remembering all of the reasons I loved the show in the first place. It's a very pleasant de ja vu.

In My Thoughts...

Your Story - When girls come into my life for the first time - to be in a small group that I am leading, to be in a Bible study or accountability group with me, or just meeting for coffee because we met and connected at some random event - I always ask, "What's your story? Who are you? What do you love? What was it like growing up in your home? Who is God to you? How did you end up in your field of work?" I love it. I love getting to know people this way. It gives me a foundation on which to build a relationship with others. I've recently been in a season of welcoming brand new people into close community with me and so I've been hearing a lot of stories. This has made me think about how I don't ask people who I have known forever to share their stories with me. People like best friends from high school or college, cousins, or my parent's friends. When people share their stories, they have the opportunity to share with you how they see God interweaving overarching themes of pain, joy, love and learning together for His glory and their good. When I only ask people who are new to my life to share their story, I miss hearing people who I've known forever tell me about how they see their own life. Of course I've been there through a lot of those moments of joy and heartache, but I interpret them through my own eyes and not through their story. If I haven't asked you to share your story with me lately, be prepared... I may be asking you soon!

What are you loving right now? I'd love to know!

XOXO,

Rebecca
